RFriends and classmates of a cyclist who was hit and killed early Saturday morning held a candlelight vigil for him on Sunday night.
Police say Jose Gamez was riding his bike on East Commerce with three other cyclists, including his wife, Rosalba Gamez, when a suspected drunk driver hit them.
Rosalba Gamez survived the crash, but Jose Gamez died at the scene.
“His wife, I’m sure right now, she’s hurting bad to know that she’s not going to see her husband anymore,” said Pete Cantu, a friend and classmate of Jose Gamez.
Cantu said once his fellow classmates found out what happened to him, they knew they had to do something for their special friend.
“We got together with some of the alumni and we said, ‘You know what? Let’s go ahead and have a vigil,’” said Leonard Alvarado, Gamez’s classmate and friend. “‘Let’s get our family together, the class of 1986 at Lanier High School.’ So, that’s what we are doing tonight, remembering our friend.”
At Sunday’s vigil, classmates consoled one another, lit candles and prayed for their friend.
Cantu said they also want Gamez’s family to know that they are thinking about them.
“I hope that all those people out there right now, that they pray for the family and all of us because it’s hard,” said Cantu. “It’s hard to lose somebody that close to us.”
Cantu and Alvarado said they are also working to raise money to help the family with funeral expenses.
Gamez leaves behind four children and one grandchild.
The suspected drunk driver has been identified as Ruben Morin III, 25.
