An alleged drunken driver crashed into a tree outside Devers late Saturday, killing one passenger and injuring another.
Ryan Dean Birdwell, 23, was driving north on SH 61 about 11:30 p.m., according to the accident report by the Department of Public Safety.
About nine miles south of the Liberty County town, Birdwell left the road, overcorrected and hit a tree, according to the release.
Garrett Haidusek, 16, was declared dead at the scene and Lucas Hughes, 14, was transported to Houston’s Memorial Hermann Hospital in stable condition with a broken leg.
Birdwell is charged with intoxicated assault with a motor vehicle and intoxicated manslaughter, according to the Montgomery County Police Reporter.
